AMC was bought out by Chrysler in 1987, but the fading out of AMC didn't happen immediately. It was through poor decisions and unfortunate decisions that started around 1983 or so. AMC for a time had been struggling, but because of the Spirit, Concord, and innovative Eagle, the first crossover suv, had a small surge in popularity.

However, by 1985, AMC was only manufacturing small cars, and did not anticipate large cars being popular again. Now, that the 70's fuel crisis was over, large cars became popular again and AMC had nothing in production to suit the consumer desire.

Also, a shift in power was happening. A few years earlier AMC had struck a partnership with French automaker Renault. This in itself was not a smart merger, and had little success in the US. To add insult to injury, Renault had eliminated 34,000 jobs, which made the public outraged, to the point that the militant group Action Directe assasinated Renault's George Besse.

Because of this Renault, who had a major stake in AMC, pushed for them to sell out. AMC concurred as they had their own power shifts in management, and their brand and models were failing.

Despite the failures, Chrysler was having large success and was looking to expand their line of vehicles, especially with the Jeep brand. Discussions started, and in 1987 Chrysler bought out AMC, not for the AMC brand, but to take over their vehicle models.

Although AMC does not live on, they live on through the Jeep and through their subsidiary AM General, which still makes Humvees to this day. Also, auto manufacturers look to some of their innovative business strategies.

The vehicle was Motor Trends Vehicle Of The Year, which was one a surprise and a big victory for AMC, especially among sagging sales.  A small hatchback, it was also regarded as a money saver because of its great gas mileage.  People praised its superior reliability, and solid form factor.

The rarest AMC car that is documented is the 1959 AMC Ambassador 4 door station wagon.  There were only 578 produced.

The next documented rare vehicle is the Jeep Scrambler CJ8, with only a few in production.

Other vehicles with low production values due to little popularity include the 1965-1967 Marlin, The 70s Rebel Machine, the Hurst, the 1971 Hornet SC/360.

Of the 1960's the rarest include the AMC Javelin and AMC AMX, which are very desirable among collectors and gain a large sum of money for stock or restored muscle cars.

Another rare, rare vehicle is the AMC Eagle Premier.  Produced after AMC's sellout to Chrysler, it is the predecessor to the actual Eagle brand (not AMC), and there is little known about this vehicle other than it followed after the wildly popular AMC Eagle of the 1980s.

Even though they only had a few muscle car models, they were some of the most innovative, most powerful, and most iconic for the era known as the muscle cars that they have not been forgotten and are some of the most desirable muscle cars according to collectors.

These vehicles had some of the largest engines, and would be competitive racers even today amongst new technology, and fast $50,000 - $250,000 sports cars.  Today, cars in pristine condition go for way more than they did back in their day.

The gremlin of the 70's may not be pretty, but it is a desirable car with collectible value.  A rare car also, sometimes it is hard to get ideas on how to customize or restore your gremlin.  These tips should help in your search for the best gremlin ever.

1. Buy many gremlins, and get all the needed parts from many - the least practical idea, it is the best way if you are restoring the car to stock.  When done sell off the other parts cars to reclaim much of your money.
2. Get a lift kit - the cars already quirky, make it even more unique.  Kits are available if you know where to look.
3. New Paintjob - admit it, 70's cars in general had bad paint jobs with a lot of turd browns, greens and oranges.  Think of silver, sky blue, or red, with contrasting stripes for that true retro flare with style
4. Rims - don't get stock, get shiny chrome rims with racing wheels to add to the custom look.
5. Carpet Kits - get rid of the shag, the holes, or the mouse pellets.  If money allows get matching custom seats.
6. Gauges - a simple trick, but nice accessory.  Add glow effects or leds for ultimate coolness.
7. Head and tail lights - Euro, tinted or blacked out lights will confuse your legend with popular civics, so stick to what you know.
8. Chrome bumpers - Getting the old bumpers rechromed will not only blind other drivers on the road, but make you win at the car shows all the time
9. Matching Airbrushed Shirt - When you go to the show, show off your car with style with a custom airbrushed t-shirt.
10. Emblem - Get a Gremlin or AMC dashboard emblem in chrome or steel to give your vehicle that stock look

The Eagle was born out of necessity.  The 70's fuel crisis, and AMC's shift of the Jeep Division to AM General, lead the CEO to create a new vehicle that provided the off-road pleasure people desired in the Jeep, with the comfort and fuel economy of a family car.

The Eagle was based upon the Concord model, except for the convertible edition which was a design in it's own right.

There have been many imitator's since the first Eagle.  After its success, Toyota came out with an AWD tercel in 84, and Subaru came out with their All Wheel Drive wagon, the Loyale, in 1983.  To this day, Subaru is most known for their cross-over wagons.  The only off-road convertible since the 80s is the rare and obscure Suzuki X-90.

The Eagle was in production from 1980 - 1988, and enjoyed great success.  However, AMC's financial stability and decline in consumer interest in the AMC brand lead them to liquidate their models to Chrysler and go out of business.  People don't realize that there was also an Eagle Premier model from 88 - 92, but it is also a hard to find vehicle.

AMC, although gone was a great innovator, out of both need and innovation.  The Eagle is proof of that, and to this day people still want the Eagle vehicle because of it's quirkiness and reliability.  Even if the AMC Eagle does not live on, it's design improvements and new AWD crossover model carries on through different brands.
